A Word from the Editor

By Tom Farrell
     Reflections of Camp:
Camp—what a wonderful place for God to work! Forty years ago this month, God got my attention and turned my life around at camp. Though I was raised in a pastor’s home, I had gotten far from God as a teenager. My public school environment and choice of friends certainly did not have a positive influence on me for righteousness. Praise the Lord for parents who cared enough to send me to camp!

While the First Great Awakening was localized primarily in New England and lasted only a few years, the Second Great Awakening swept across the expanding country from Connecticut to Kentucky and was sustained for several decades. It was a very remarkable and extensive work of God that constituted a significant turning point in both church and national history.

The Evangelist in Church History: Vasasor Powell

By Mark Herbster
Vavasor Powell: Welsh Puritan Evangelist 1617-1670
“Powell was an ardent preacher and as his Welsh defenders wrote it may be said without hyperbole, that he feared not the face, nor yet the fury of the most menacing, most mighty mortal.”

Repentance: What is it?

A change of mind, accompanied with regret and sorrow for something done, and an earnest wish that it was undone. But the true gospel repentance, or "repentance unto life," is sorrow for sin, grief for having committed it, and a turning away from it with abhorrence, accompanied with sincere endeavors, in reliance on God's grace and the influences of the Holy Spirit, to live in humble and holy obedience to the commands and will of God. This is that repentance which always accompanies true faith, and to which is promised the free forgiveness of sin through the merits of Jesus Christ, Mt 4:17; Ac 3:19; 11:18; 20:12.
